India levelled the T20I series 1-1 against Australia with a five-wicket win in Hobart on Sunday, thanks to an impressive late assault from Washington Sundar and steady bowling spells led by Arshdeep Singh. After being asked to chase 187, India were in a tricky position at 145 for five in the 15th over before Washington’s unbeaten 49 off 23 balls, including three fours and four sixes, turned the match around.Jitesh Sharma chipped in with 22* off 13 balls as India crossed the finish line comfortably. Earlier, Arshdeep Singh had made the early breakthrough with figures of 3 for 35, while Jasprit Bumrah kept things tight from the other end. The hosts posted 186 for six, with Marcus Stoinis (64) and Tim David (74) leading their resistance. After the win, India captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the team’s composure and the balance in the playing XI. He singled out Washington’s adaptability in the lower order and credited the bowling unit for executing plans efficiently. “Winning the toss was important today, and I am really happy with how the team performed. Washi (Washington Sundar) showed great flexibility, Jitesh contributed well, and Arshdeep was outstanding. It felt like the right combination tonight,” Suryakumar said after the match. The skipper also lauded the Bumrah-Arshdeep pairing, calling it a balanced and effective combination. “Yes, they are a fantastic pair — a bit like Shubman and Abhishek up top. Bumrah does his job quietly, keeps it tight, and Arshdeep capitalises from the other end. Together, they are a really lethal combination,” he said. Arshdeep, who returned to the XI after being benched for the first two T20Is, spoke about the clarity in his bowling approach and how working alongside Bumrah benefits him.

Do you think winning the toss was crucial for India’s performance in the match?

“When someone like Bumrah is bowling from the other end, batters often take more risks against me, which gives me wicket-taking opportunities. I just try to enjoy my bowling and keep my plans simple,” Arshdeep said. “No matter the situation — powerplay or death — I just focus on execution and stick to what I have practised.” With the series now tied 1-1, both teams will head to a new venue with two matches remaining.
