Last rites of industrialist Vijaypat Singhania performed in Mumbai

Mr. Singhania headed the Raymond Group for two decades. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan, he was also an adventurer, holding the world record for the highest altitude gained in a hot air balloon.

Mr. Singhania’s estranged son and Raymond Group Chairman Gautam Singhania announced the news of his demise on Saturday (March 28, 2026). He stated, “With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform the passing of Padma Bhushan Dr. Vijaypat Singhania. A visionary leader, philanthropist, and an inspiring personality, whose legacy will continue to guide and inspire generations. We pray for the departed soul to attain eternal peace.”
The funeral was performed at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Kalbadevi, Mumbai at 3 p.m. in the presence of family and friends.
Leaders pay tributes
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was present and paid his last tributes. Mr. Shinde called him a “trustworthy” man in the business world and remembered his relations with Thane, saying, “He was a great personality, who achieved so many records like flying in a micro light air flight from London to Delhi.”
Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also paid their tributes and expressed that they are “deeply saddened” by his demise.
“His contribution to the textile industry, his philanthropy and adventurous spirit will continue to inspire generations together. ‘Raymond – The Complete Man’ is not just a tagline we all grew up with, but has set many trends, right from quality and perfection in entrepreneurship to communication and brand. I offer my humble tributes to the man who set the legacy called ‘Raymond’ Group,” Mr. Fadnavis said on X.
Mr. Singhania’s daughter-in-law, Nawaz Modi Singhania, after the final rites said, “He was father-like to me, was one of the greatest men I will ever have the honour of knowing. He was like a second father to me, guiding me, advising me, supporting me, and providing for me at the highest.”
Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad also gave her condolences to his family and friends, saying, “Saddened by the passing of Dr. Vijaypat Singhania, former Chairman of the Raymond Group, former Sheriff of Mumbai, and a towering figure of Indian industry. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family and friends find strength in this hour of grief.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said, “Dr. Vijaypat Singhania ji, an industrialist, aviator, and philanthropist who inspired many. My heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, his colleagues and countless admirers whose lives were touched by his work and generosity.”
