Set in the serene heart of South Mumbai, on top of Malabar Hill, is one of India’s most iconic private residences — Birla House. This is where Yash Birla lives. The Indian industrialist and the chairman of the Yash Birla Group, Yash is known for carrying forward the legacy while blending business with spirituality, travel and fitness. Birla House is not your ordinary private home but a century-old mansion which played an important role in the country’s socio-political history. This historic home is a rare combination of architecture, heritage, and modern living. The property represents a living legacy of and shows the evolution of affluent residential real estate in India’s financial capital, Mumbai in Maharashtra. In a house tour video posted on the YouTube channel Mashable India, Yash Birla himself took the audience through his Malabar Hill mansion in Mumbai.History of Birla HouseThe house was originally built by Rameshwar Das Birla, the great-grandfather of Yash Birla, making it almost 100 years old. Over a century ago, the house was a prominent gathering spot for eminent personalities from India’s freedom movement. In the video, Yash Birla says that the Birla House has hosted a number of political leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Some of the furniture inside the house is over 90 years old. The mansion’s drawing rooms are alive with some historic moments and memories. The one sofa in the living room is preserved well as Gandhi ji once sat there teaching important life lessons.

Today, the family home is all about morning prayers, spiritual corners, and traditional rituals. One of the important parts of the house is marble-stone temple with a Narmadeshwar Shivling anchoring the garden. The other rooms are complete with photographs from the past and honouring the legacy of those who shaped its story.Location: Maralab Hill, a premium luxury addressBirla House is in Malabar Hill. The area is highly regarded as Mumbai’s most exclusive residential market with some of the highest property values in India. The reason behind this would be limited supply of large plots and sweeping sea views. Living here is more of a status symbol as the area is home to ambassadors, and corporate leaders.According to Liases Foras, a real estate research firm, Malabar Hill had 10 active residential projects, developed by 10 different builders (till September 2025). These include well-known names such as Lodha Group, Birla Estates, and JSW Realty. Together, these projects offer 176 ultra-luxury homes, out of which 30 units are still unsold. Even though prices are super high — ranging from ₹85,000 to ₹1.80 lakh per sq ft (carpet area), Malabar Hill still saw sales of 21 homes in the last 12 months. This shows steady demand in this premium market.Valuation Several public records and municipal filings offer a sense of its real estate value. Official documents from a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proceeding estimated the mansion’s worth at more than ₹425.50 crore in a heritage attachment context, a figure that conservatively reflects its market value a few years ago. However, given the current residential price in South Mumbai, a conservative market valuation of Birla House, considering its size, heritage value, and location, would likely put its current worth well above ₹500 crore and potentially into the ₹700 crore+ bracket.Property Features

Birla House is all about sprawling layout reflecting a bygone era of high ceilings, colonial charm, and carefully designed rooms. The mansion’s interiors preserve original features, which is the most beautiful part of the house, from antique woodwork and decorative stone detailing, everything is a part of history here.Yet, the house embraces modern comforts with ease. There’s a fully-equipped terrace gym and personalised modern art work. Birla House today is more than a home, it is a living museum of India’s freedom struggle. Whether as a legacy estate or a hypothetical investment, the value of this historic home can’t be matched in the residential landscape of South Mumbai.
